Minions Movie Review

If you're a fan of the Despicable Me movies, you know how adorable the minions are. They're yellow pill-shaped creatures that wear goggles and talk in a childlike gibberish that combines English, Spanish, French, and possibly a few other languages as well. These little creatures may be evil, but they're also selfless. They put themselves at risk to protect their brethren, and even their own lives. Kids (and adults) can't help but love them, even when they're doing the most evil things imaginable.

So, it's no surprise that Illumination Entertainment would want to continue the story of these beloved creatures in their new movie, Minions. The movie opens in 1968 as Kevin, Stuart, and Bob are on a quest to find their first master. They end up at a villain convention in Orlando and meet Scarlet Overkill, the world's first female supervillain. After a brief conversation, she hires the trio and tells them to bring her the crown from Queen Elizabeth II of England. She provides them with gadgets and a disguise to help them accomplish their task. Once they do, she rewards the trio with a tiny crown for teddy bear Tim, Stuart a guitar, and Bob a knighthood. She also connects them with her husband Herb, who teaches them to master martial arts.

However, Scarlet feels betrayed and vows to get revenge on the three minions. Meanwhile, the minions get a call from Kevin telling them to find a new master. The three minion brothers are hesitant but Scarlet promises to make them king and queen again if they accept the job. Kevin and Stu then travel with the other minions to her castle, and they convince her to give them the throne again by showing her the teddy bear she previously rejected. She also rewards them with more gadgets and a crocodile that resembles the one from the Excalibur legend.

The rest of the film is about the minions trying to find a new master and their attempts at revenge. The cast is a mix of new and returning faces. Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm voice Scarlet Overkill and Herb Overkill respectively, while Taraji P. Henson, Russell Brand, and Danny Trejo round out the supporting cast as villains. Pierre Coffin, the director of the original Despicable Me, returns to direct this installment.

It doesn't add a lot to the story of the previous films, but it does deliver the same sense of silliness and madcap looney tunes energy that made them such a success. Kids will love the movie, and adults can enjoy the celebrity voices and the many silly incidental jokes that are sprinkled throughout the movie. If the series was ever in danger of fading into obscurity, this movie might be the one to save it. It certainly helps that Carell and the gang from the minion factory are back to reprise their roles as Gru and his lovable crew.
